What are the Eligibility Requirements?

The state of Texas lists a few requirements that must be met to successfully obtain a license to carry. 

  1. No felony conviction within the last 10 years
  2. No Class A or B misdemeanors within the last 5 years
  3. Eligible to purchase handguns
  4. 21 years of age or 18 years of age as active duty military or 18 and honorably discharged
  5. Must be of sound mind
  6. Cannot be delinquent on child support payments

What Disqualifies you from getting a Texas LTC?

Subsequently, there are a couple things that may disqualify you from meeting the eligibility requirements to obtain your license to carry. 

  1. Pending criminal charges
  2. Chemical or Alcohol Dependency
  3. Certain Psychological Disorders
  4. Not being a Texas Resident
  5. Restricted under court order or a spousal restraining order

Do I Have to Take a Class?

Specifically, the Texas LTC Eligibility Requirement includes the completion of a state approved LTC course instructed by a person with a DPS instructor license. 

A. Classroom Learning

The classroom portion of the Texas LTC course is offered in person or online.

B. On-Site Shooting Course

Lastly, a Texas LTC Eligibility Requirement is the completion of a shooting course. The individual will pass for course with at least a 70% score. The score is based off of points earned from shooting a human silhouette target and achieving 175 points out of 250 points.

Can a Non-Resident get a LTC in Texas?

Legally, the individual must be a current Texas resident to meet the LTC Eligibility Requirements 

Non-resident individual can meet the eligibility requirements if they test within the state and have the intent of establishing residency in Texas.
